Wetsuit Selection & Fit

What size wetsuit should I order?

Go by your height and weight. Every product page has a size chart. Our fullsuits and tops are sized S to XL, and the V3 fullsuit adds short and tall fits.

If you're between two sizes, size up. Still not sure? Email info@flatrocksurf.com with your height and weight and we'll tell you which size to get.

How should a wetsuit fit?

Snug all over, with no loose folds at the lower back, armpits or behind the knees. It should feel a little tight when it's dry, because neoprene loosens once it's wet.

It shouldn't restrict your breathing or stop you lifting your arms over your head to paddle. If it does, go up a size.

What if I'm between wetsuit sizes?

Size up. A slightly roomier suit is easier to live with than one that's too tight across the chest and shoulders. If the fit still isn't right, you can exchange it for another size within 100 days, as long as it's unworn, unwashed and still tagged.

What are the short and tall sizes on the V3 fullsuit?

The V3 fullsuit comes in S, MS, M, MT, LS, L and XL. MS, M and MT have the same chest, waist and hip measurements and differ only in arm and leg length. LS does the same for L.

So if a medium fits your body but the arms and legs are too long or too short, pick MS (shorter) or MT (taller) and the fit through the body stays the same.

What thickness wetsuit do I need?

It depends on the water temperature. Here's the rule we use:

  • 68°F (20°C) and above: a 1.5mm wetsuit top or springsuit
  • 57 to 68°F (14 to 20°C): a 3/2mm fullsuit
  • 52 to 57°F (11 to 14°C): a 4/3mm fullsuit with boots
  • Below 52°F (11°C): a 5/4mm or thicker fullsuit with a hood, boots and gloves

Pick for the coldest water you'll surf, and go a step warmer if you feel the cold.

What water temperature is a 3/2mm wetsuit good for?

Water between 57 and 68°F (14 and 20°C). The 3mm core keeps your body warm and the 2mm arms and legs leave you free to paddle.

That range covers a big part of the year at most Australian beaches, including Sydney's winter.

What wetsuit do I need for surfing in Sydney?

A 3/2mm fullsuit. Sydney's water sits around 64 to 66°F (18 to 19°C) in winter (June to August), which is right in the 3/2mm range. Once the water is above 68°F (20°C), most people swap to a 1.5mm wetsuit top over boardshorts. Our V3 fullsuit and V2 wetsuit top cover the whole year between them.

When should I wear a wetsuit top instead of a fullsuit?

When the water is 68°F (20°C) or warmer. A 1.5mm wetsuit top over boardshorts is for the days when a fullsuit is too much and a rash guard isn't enough.

Will my wetsuit stretch over time?

A little. Limestone neoprene has some natural give, so the suit moulds to your body over the first few surfs. It shouldn't go baggy if you've picked the right size.

Our Wetsuits

What's the difference between the V2 and V3 fullsuit?

Both are 3/2mm chest-zip fullsuits made from limestone neoprene, with the same 24-panel cut, glued and blindstitched seams, and the same 57 to 68°F (14 to 20°C) range. V3 changes four things:

  • Lining: the thermal lining runs from the chest all the way down to the knees. On V2 it covers the core.
  • Cuffs: the wrist and ankle cuffs are stronger and seal on two smooth-skin bands, so less water gets in when you duck dive.
  • Key holder: there's a stitched loop inside the chest for your car key.
  • Sizes: V3 adds short and tall fits (MS, MT and LS) alongside S, M, L and XL. V2 comes in S, M, L and XL only.

Should I buy the V2 or the V3 fullsuit?

If you surf a lot through winter or feel the cold, get the V3 fullsuit. The longer lining keeps your legs warmer, and the short and tall sizes help if a standard size doesn't suit your height.

If you want a proven 3/2mm fullsuit for less, the V2 fullsuit has the same cut, neoprene and seams and now costs less than V3.

What's the difference between the V1 and V2 wetsuit top?

Both are 1.5mm long sleeve tops cut from six panels of four-way stretch limestone neoprene, and the sizing hasn't changed.

The V2 wetsuit top has a stronger cord at the waist, so it holds tighter and lets in less water on duck dives, plus a new FLRC logo on the chest. The V1 wetsuit top is our original top, with a toggle at the waist.

What are the Sarvo and Bronte series?

They're the names of our two wetsuit ranges. Sarvo is our 3/2mm fullsuit: Sarvo I was the first, Sarvo II is the V2 fullsuit and Sarvo III is the V3 fullsuit. Bronte is our 1.5mm wetsuit top: Bronte I is the V1 top and Bronte II is the V2 top.

Do your fullsuits have a chest zip or a back zip?

Our fullsuits have a chest zip. A chest zip lets less water in than a back zip and leaves the back panel free to stretch when you paddle. The V3 has a YKK chest zip with a seal panel behind it.

Where is the key holder on the V3 fullsuit?

Inside the chest, by the zip. It's a stitched loop for your car key, so you don't have to hide it on the wheel well.

What makes Flatrock wetsuits different?

We started in Sydney in 2017 because we were sick of wetsuits that chafed, rashed and fought us on every paddle. So we built suits with the features you'd expect from a premium wetsuit, at a price that doesn't need one:

  • Limestone-based neoprene with four-way stretch
  • Glued and blindstitched seams, taped on the inside
  • Thermal lining (chest to knee on the V3 fullsuit)
  • A 24-panel cut on our fullsuits that follows the body
  • 100-day returns and a 12-month warranty

Every suit is designed in Sydney and tested in Sydney surf.

Do you make custom wetsuits?

No, not at this stage. We do change our suits based on what customers tell us, so if there's a fit or style you'd like us to make, email info@flatrocksurf.com.

Materials, Tech and Sustainability

What is limestone neoprene?

It's neoprene made from limestone instead of petroleum. It's light, stretchy and warm, and every Flatrock wetsuit has been made from it since day one.

Are Flatrock wetsuits eco-friendly?

We've taken a few practical steps. Our wetsuits are made from limestone-based neoprene rather than petroleum-based neoprene, and the layers are bonded with water-based lamination adhesive. A suit that lasts longer also means fewer suits in landfill, so we build ours to go the distance and back them with a 12-month warranty.

What types of neoprene are used in wetsuits?

There are three main types:

  • Petroleum-based neoprene: the most common and usually the cheapest.
  • Limestone-based neoprene: made from limestone instead of oil. It's what we use.
  • Natural rubber (such as Yulex): made from plant-based rubber.

What are glued and blindstitched (GBS) seams?

The panels are glued together first, then stitched with a needle that doesn't go all the way through the neoprene. Because there are no holes through the suit, the seams don't leak.

On our fullsuits every seam is also taped on the inside, so cold water has nowhere to get in along the stitch line.

What lining do your fullsuits have?

A quick-drying stretch terry thermal lining. On the V3 fullsuit it runs from the chest down to the knees, with super-stretch lining on the arms. On the V2 fullsuit it covers the core.

What packaging do you use?

All our orders ship in biodegradable, recyclable packaging.

Do your wetsuits come with a warranty?

Yes. Everything we sell has a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase, covering manufacturing defects such as:

  • Seam separation

If your claim is approved, we'll repair the product or replace it. The warranty covers the original buyer of products bought directly from us, and it's on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

What isn't covered by the warranty?

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Damage from misuse, neglect, or not following the care instructions
  • Damage from long sun exposure
  • Fin cuts, and damage from Velcro or leash attachments
  • Products that have been altered in any way
  • Damage from washing it the wrong way

How do I make a warranty claim?

Email info@flatrocksurf.com with your order number and a description of the problem (photos help). If we ask you to send it in, make sure it's clean and completely dry. You pay shipping to us, and if the claim is approved, we pay to send the repaired or replacement suit back to you.

Care & Maintenance

How do I look after my wetsuit?

  • Rinse it in fresh, cold water after every surf.
  • Hang it inside out to dry, out of direct sun.
  • Once it's dry, store it flat or on a wide hanger.
  • Never use a washing machine, a dryer or hot water.

Looking after it this way keeps the neoprene stretchy and the seams strong for longer.

Can I put my wetsuit in the washing machine?

No. A washing machine, dryer or hot water will damage the neoprene and the seam glue, and damage from washing it the wrong way isn't covered by our warranty. A rinse in cold fresh water is all it needs.

How long will my wetsuit last?

With proper care, a good few years. It'll last even longer if you rotate between two suits or don't surf every day. Rinsing it after every session and drying it out of the sun make the biggest difference.
