The suits kept letting us down. So we made our own.

The origins

Flatrock started on the shores of Sydney in 2017, when a handful of local surfers got tired of what mainstream wetsuits were doing to them. Chafing across the neck. Rashes under the arms. Shoulders that fought back on every paddle.

The suit had become the thing getting in the way of the session. Nobody was building the one we actually wanted at a reasonable price point, so we stopped waiting.

Our first design

Series
Bronte I
Type
Long sleeve top
Thickness
1.5mm

We partnered with a Sydney design company and started the top again from nothing. Comfort came first. Performance and sustainability had to fit around it.

That became the Bronte Series Wetsuit Top. Six panels of limestone neoprene, four-way stretch, and a toggle at the waist to cut the flush on duck dives. Light, close to the body, and it stays out of the way when you paddle.

Going the full length

Series
Sarvo I
Type
Fullsuit
Thickness
3/2mm

With the top working, we went after the fullsuit. Too many surfers were stuck choosing between budget suits that rashed and restricted, and premium suits they could not afford.

We wanted every essential feature of a premium wetsuit, at a price that did not require one:

  • Limestone neoprene
  • Glued and blind-stitched seams
  • Internal taping on every seam
  • Thermal core lining
  • An advanced panel design

That became the Sarvo Series I, our first men's 3/2mm fullsuit.

Perfecting the craft

Series
Sarvo II
Type
Fullsuit
Thickness
3/2mm

The Sarvo Series I proved that quality did not have to carry a premium price. It also showed us three places the suit still fell short.

The Series II answered all three: a 24-panel cut that followed the body more closely, a stronger zip, and a more flexible neoprene that sat closer without gripping.

The third series

Series
Sarvo III
Bronte II
Type
Fullsuit
Long sleeve top
Thickness
3/2mm
1.5mm

The V3 fullsuit runs its thermal lining from the chest all the way to the knees, so the heat is held across the whole suit rather than the core alone.

Short and tall fits sit alongside the regular sizes, so the suit can be picked for height as well as build. The wrist and ankle cuffs seal on two bands of smooth skin, so less water works its way in at the openings. And there is a stitched loop inside the chest, somewhere for the car key that is not the wheel well.

The Bronte top moved to its second series in the same year, with a stronger cord at the waist to hold it tighter and a new FLRC logo on the chest.
